During Edward 1's reign dissemination of arms within kin was common. Transmission of arms to tenants was of more recent origin than the scope of this site, but did take place during the later years of Edward 1's reign. Adoption of heraldic devices began in the highest social circles and passed downward with increased frequency during the later 12th century.

From the 1270's onward, rolls of arms began to proliferate and to become part of the chivalric culture. Most rolls were in "blazon" (the language of heraldry) or in "trick" (shields drawn with the colors indicated by letters).

The "Great Roll of Arms" or the "Parliamentary Roll of Arms" contained little more than a thousand names. The Lacey's, hereditary constables of Chester, bore party per pale (a shield divided lengthwise. Stephen De Segrave who would become justiciar of England bore gules, three garbs or. His son bore sable, three garbs argent The Earldom of Chester passed to Prince Edward in 1254 and thus to the crown. The Carlaverock poem about the Lords and Knights present at Edward 1's siege of Carlaverock in 1300 gives 106 blazons of their arms.
